"The 29.29km Vaarinmaja stage wrapped up the action for the second day of Rally Finland action with Jari Matti Latvala setting the pace with a best time of 5:10.1 ahead of Sebastien Loeb while Formula One star Kimi Raikkonen and Mads Ostberg both had problems.
Mikko Hirvonen was third fastest and heads into the day three on Sunday with a 32 second advantage at the head of the field as he chases his third straight victory with the works Ford team.
"It's been a really good day, and everything went completely to plan," said the Finn. "Tomorrow we will continue like I have today. Shame Sebastien had a problem because it was a fantastic fight. But there is not so much pressure on us now."
Loeb was resigned to his second position, but content to cruise to the finish and claim eight valuable championship points. “There is nothing else to do except to finish now,” he said. “Mikko has been driving so well and so fast and I don't think I could have caught him. Now the game is over."
While defending champion Loeb has effectively settled for the runner up position in his Citroen while the battle for third position continues. With Latvala recording three of the last five fastest stage times, the Ford driver has moved ten seconds clear of Citroen's Dani Sordo as he aims to consolidate his position to help Ford in the manufacturers' championship.
"It has really been a tough day, first being ill in the morning and then pushing to overtake Sordo,” Latvala said. “More of the same tomorrow, without the sickness I hope." Sordo however seemed less thrilled with his day: “The team tell me to think of the Championship and preserve the car.

Matti Rantanen remains in fifth position and while it is a great effort from the Munchi's Ford driver, the Finn is less than satisfied with his own performance and clearly has very high expectations... "Not such a great day, but I am lucky to be here as I was almost off the road in this stage,” he said. “I cannot be happy because I haven't fulfilled my goal, which was to be as close as possible as Mikko and Sebastien.”
Mads Ostberg had just dropped to seventh position on the last stage with Sebastien Ogier taking over sixth position in his Citroen Junior C4, but unfortunately for the Norwegian Subaru driver a mistake saw him end the day stuck in a ditch.
With Ostberg's demise from the rally, Jari Ketomaa takes over seventh position in his Subaru ahead of Matthew Wilson who moves into the points in eighth position in his Stobart Ford ahead of Conrad Rautenbach and Khalid Al Quassimi.
Kimi Raikkonen had been suffering with an engine problem with his Grande Punto S2000 while running third in class and 15th overall. An off and subsequent roll mid-stage however drops him out of contention on what had been a very impressive WRC debut.
The action resumes on Sunday morning with the 10.82km Hunnula stage which gets underway at 08.17 local time (06.17 BST). "

Matti Rantanen sigue quinto en su Munchi's Ford con Mads Ostberg en sexta posición por el momento y Sebastien Ogier acercándose rápidamente por detrás. Ostberg ha sido octavo en este tramo, con lo que ha perdido seis segundos respecto al piloto de Citroën Júnior, que ha terminado quinto. Al dirigirse a la asistencia, la ventaja de Ostberg se ha reducido a 2,2 segundos…
Jari Ketomaa ha sido dos segundos más lento que Ogier en la especial, pero ahora está a solo 15 segundos de Ostberg en la lucha por la sexta, séptima y octava posiciones.
Matthew Wilson sigue rodando bastante solo en novena posición, 42 segundos por detrás de Ketomaa pero más de dos minutos por delante del décimo, Conrad Rautenbach, que hoy está teniendo muchos problemas con su Citroën Júnior C4.
